President Yoon Criticizes Lee Jae-myung's Support Fund: "Why Only Give 250,000 KRW? Why Not 10 Billion or 100 Billion KRW?"

President Yoon Suk-yeol criticized former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung's proposal to provide 250,000 KRW (approximately 200 USD) to every citizen, questioning, "Why give only 250,000 KRW? Why not give 10 billion or 100 billion KRW to each person?"

During a closing speech at a meeting for the announcement of the "Second Half Economic Policy Direction and Dynamic Economy Roadmap" held today (the 3rd) at the Blue House Guesthouse, President Yoon emphasized the need for a sound fiscal policy.

Referring to indiscriminate cash support proposals, President Yoon remarked, "Isn't it obvious what the outcome would be? Not only would inflation skyrocket beyond imagination, but the country's international credibility would also plummet, making it impossible for the government or businesses to operate abroad."

He also criticized the idea of financing through government bond issuance, stating, "Some argue that as long as the balance sheet balances, there's no problem."

Regarding support for small business owners, President Yoon urged that "instead of just distributing money, we need to provide tailored support where it is genuinely needed."

President Yoon also explained the background of focusing on export promotion policies since the second half of 2022.

He stated, "We have to align interest rates to a certain extent with the United States because capital flows out. But instead of just responding with interest rates and exchange rates, the government aimed to drive exports to prevent foreign currency shortages."

He added, "The government should engage in diplomatic and security cooperation to create opportunities for our companies to compete internationally."
