"This is genuinely spine-chilling." Shock and outrage... Celebrities are up in arms.
"I was shocked because it sounds eerily similar to my voice," said Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson.
"This is quite serious. It gives me chills," remarked singer Jang Yoon-jung.
Generative AI that replicates famous celebrities so accurately it’s indistinguishable from the real thing has caused a backlash, with celebrities expressing their shock and dismay. In response, YouTube has introduced new regulations allowing for the removal of such AI-generated content.
OpenAI also delayed the release of the voice feature of 'ChatGPT,' which faced backlash for its uncanny resemblance to Scarlett Johansson's voice.
Concerns over the legal and ethical issues of AI are spreading rapidly.
According to the IT industry on the 3rd, YouTube has implemented regulations allowing individuals to request the removal of generative AI content that mimics their face or voice. Once a request is received, YouTube will review the content to determine if it involves alterations or impersonations of celebrities, and if found problematic, will enforce removal within 48 hours.
Reports must be made directly by the affected individual or, in the case of minors or deceased persons, by their representatives.
The industry reaction is, "It was bound to happen eventually."
OpenAI also halted and postponed the release of a voice service that had faced criticism from Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson. In a statement, Johansson said, "I felt shock and anger when I heard the released audio that sounded very similar to my voice."
OpenAI stated, "We are improving the detection and rejection functions for specific content in 'voice mode'" and added, "It will take another month to meet the release criteria."
As AI technology advances, videos are being produced that make it seem as though a particular singer is performing a song, garnering hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.
In Korea, an AI video that made it seem like IU was singing BB's hit song "Bamyanggaeng" caused a stir. This video was created by teaching AI to mimic a famous celebrity's voice, not by the actual singer. The result was so indistinguishable from reality that celebrities expressed discomfort.
Singer Jang Yoon-jung, after hearing the AI-generated song, said, "This is quite serious. It gives me chills," adding, "I thought AI wouldn't be able to sing, but if this continues, what's the point of recording as a singer?"
Park Myung-soo also voiced his concern, "I didn’t think it would be that identical, but what should we celebrities do?"
As AI advances to a level similar to humans, concerns about various legal and social issues, as well as safety concerns, are increasing.
While there is anticipation about how far AI will develop, the idea of it potentially replacing most human roles is truly frightening.
