Director Son Woong-jung and Two Coaches First Summoned by Prosecutors in Child Abuse Investigation

In connection with the child abuse allegations at the 'SON Football Academy,' a youth soccer training institution run by Son Woong-jung, the father of Son Heung-min, the prosecution has summoned Son and other suspects for investigation.

According to legal circles on the 3rd, the Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office summoned Son Woong-jung, chief coach Son Heung-yoon, and coach A, who are all under suspicion of child abuse under the Child Welfare Act. The prosecution reportedly reviewed the overall case records handed over by the police along with the complaint details.

Son and the other coaches are accused of physically or emotionally abusing a child, identified as B. Prior to this, in March, B's side filed a complaint against Son and the two coaches, alleging continuous assault, verbal abuse, and corporal punishment during the academy's training camp in Japan and at the dormitory in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. In a statement, Director Son Woong-jung acknowledged that corporal punishment occurred during physical training but explained, "There were no words or actions without a foundation of love for the children."

The Gangwon Police Agency investigated and referred Son and the two coaches to the prosecution in April. With the first summons investigation now conducted, there is growing interest in whether charges will be filed.
