OpenAI Board Welcomes Apple, Creating Uneasy Coexistence with Microsoft

Apple's Participation in OpenAI Board as Observer Potential for Rivalry and Cooperation Between Apple and Microsoft

OpenAI, a leading AI development company globally, has invited Apple to join its board as an 'observer.' This move means that the world's top two companies by market capitalization, Microsoft (MS) and Apple, will both be involved with OpenAI, sparking interest in their respective AI strategies.

According to Bloomberg on the 2nd (local time), Phil Schiller, who led Apple’s marketing, will join OpenAI's board as an observer starting at the end of the year. Schiller, a veteran with significant influence within Apple, will join MS Vice President Di Templeton, who is already participating as an observer on the OpenAI board.

Bloomberg explained that Apple’s involvement in the OpenAI board is part of a contract announced at last month’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The agreement allows Apple’s AI assistant, Siri, to connect with ChatGPT without either company incurring costs.

With Apple’s participation, it will hold equal status with MS on the OpenAI board. MS, as OpenAI’s largest investor, provides the infrastructure for AI training and services, while OpenAI supplies its GPT models to MS on a priority basis. This represents a significant shift, as OpenAI navigates between two tech giants to secure advantageous positions.

Bloomberg noted that having both MS and Apple attend board meetings could lead to complex issues between the long-time rivals and partners. It predicted, "MS might prefer Apple to step out during critical discussions with OpenAI."

Recently, MS and OpenAI have been distancing themselves. While MS's main AI services rely on OpenAI’s technology, the companies compete in areas like chatbots and enterprise services.

MS has been developing its own Small Language Model (SLM), ‘Phi,’ for use in key products like Copilot+ PCs, reducing reliance on OpenAI’s more expensive models.

Additionally, US and European antitrust authorities are investigating the collaboration between MS and OpenAI for potential monopoly concerns, prompting both companies to demonstrate independent operations.

In this context, OpenAI's sudden closeness with Apple raises speculation about potential rifts in its relationship with MS.

Despite this, Apple seemed to downplay OpenAI’s role at the WWDC in June, not prominently featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, even though he attended. Apple also mentioned the possibility of incorporating other AI technologies like Google Gemini.

However, Apple’s decision to send an observer to OpenAI’s board signals significant interest in the company. Apple is perceived to be lagging behind other big tech firms in developing generative AI models but showcased its own on-device small language model and large server model at WWDC, hinting at aggressive future moves in generative AI.

OpenAI, though supported by MS's investment and infrastructure, needs to sustain itself as an independent entity. Integrating ChatGPT into the Apple ecosystem, including iPhones, could substantially expand its user base. While Apple prevents OpenAI from using customer data, it cannot stop customers from voluntarily sharing their data with ChatGPT.

The Information highlighted that having both the world’s first and second largest tech companies on its board underscores OpenAI’s central role in AI.

Currently, the OpenAI board includes Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora; Larry Summers, former US Treasury Secretary; Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart; Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and Nicole Seligman, former president of Sony Entertainment. Observers do not have voting rights and may have to leave during crucial discussions.
