Rain Returns to Central Regions, Heat Wave in the South with Temperatures up to 33°C

Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Across the Country

On Thursday, the 4th, most regions in Korea will experience heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder, and lightning. Rain will begin in the late afternoon in the Seoul metropolitan area, northern inland Gangwon, and Chungnam, and will spread to the rest of Gangwon, Chungbuk, and northern Gyeongbuk by night. The southern regions and Jeju Island will experience heat with maximum perceived temperatures reaching around 33°C.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon will receive 30mm and 20mm of rain per hour, respectively, from the night of the 4th to the early morning of the 5th. The Chungcheong region will see 30-50mm per hour of rain from late night on the 4th to the morning of the 5th. Gyeongbuk will have 20-30mm of rain per hour from the night of the 4th to the morning of the 5th.

Jeonnam and Jeonbuk will experience 20-30mm and 30-50mm of rain per hour, respectively, between the early morning and the morning of the 5th. Gyeongnam will see about 20mm of rain per hour from early morning to the morning of the 5th.

Expected rainfall over the two days until the 5th includes:

  • Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, inland and mountainous Gangwon, Gwangju, Jeonnam, inland Gyeongnam, Daegu, and inland Gyeongbuk: 30-80mm (more than 100mm in some parts of southern Gyeonggi)
  • Daejeon, Sejong, Chungnam, Chungbuk, and Jeonbuk: 30-100mm (more than 150mm in some parts of Daejeon, Sejong, Chungnam, and more than 120mm in some parts of Chungbuk)
  • West Sea 5 Islands: 20-60mm
  • East coast of Gangwon, Busan, Ulsan, southern coast of Gyeongnam, east coast of Gyeongbuk, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo: 10-40mm
  • Jeju Island: around 5mm on the 4th

Morning temperatures will range from 19-25°C, and daytime highs will be between 26-34°C. Parts of the southern regions and Jeju Island under a heat wave advisory will experience perceived temperatures around 33°C, while other areas will have perceived temperatures around 31°C. However, temperatures may temporarily drop in rainy areas.

Fine dust levels will be 'good' to 'moderate' nationwide due to effective atmospheric diffusion and the rain.

Until the morning, dense fog with visibility less than 200 meters will be present along the coasts of Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, and Jeju Island, while other regions will have fog with visibility less than 1 kilometer. Sea fog will also be present in most seas for some time.

In the Yeongdong region of Gangwon, winds will blow strongly with instantaneous speeds exceeding 55 km/h (70 km/h in mountainous areas).

In the outer seas of the central and southern parts of the East Sea, winds will blow very strongly at speeds of 35-60 km/h with high waves until the morning.

Wave heights will be 0.5-1.5 meters in the coastal waters of the East, West, and South Seas.

In the outer seas (within approximately 200 km from the coastline), waves are expected to be 1.0-2.5 meters in the East Sea and 0.5-2.0 meters in the West and South Seas.
